2022 W $1 Colorized Purple Heart Hall of Honor Coin (70)

The Purple Heart is awarded to members of the U.S. Armed Forces who have been wounded or killed in enemy action. The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor’s mission is to commemorate the service and sacrifice of the men and women who were killed or wounded in action, representing Purple Heart recipients from the Civil War to the present day.

The National Purple Heart Honor Mission is dedicated to paying tribute to our nation's combat wounded through special outreach and educational programming. The U.S. Mint is helping in that tribute with the creation of the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor Colorized Silver Dollar. A strict mintage of only 25,000 coins will be observed.

The Obverse features a colorized Purple Heart with the bust of George Washington inset into the field. The inscription reads, “COMBAT WOUNDED & KILLED IN ACTION,” “LIBERTY,” “1932,” “2022,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.” Five stars represent the branches of the military. It was in 1932 that General Douglas MacArthur renamed the Badge of Military Merit as the Purple Heart.

The Reverse depicts a nurse in a World War I helmet as she bandages a wounded service member on a stretcher. More than 23,000 women nurses served in the Army and Navy during that war. The inscription states, “UNITED STATES of AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “ONE DOLLAR.”

With each National Purple Heart Hall of Honor 2022 Colorized Silver Dollar that is purchased, $10 is paid to the National Purple Heart Honor Mission, Inc., to support its mission, including capital improvements to the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor facilities. Additionally, the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) is also donating $2 to the foundation for each commemorative Purple Heart Silver Dollar that it grades.

    • MS-69 silver eagles are ideal for investors who want an affordable, yet high-quality example of the beautiful American Silver Eagle, which features the critically acclaimed Walking Liberty design on the obverse (or “head’s side”) and heraldic eagle on the reverse (“tail’s side”). MS-69 specimens typically have just one or two minor surfaces flaws.
    • MS-70 silver eagles are considered technically “perfect” in the numismatic sense. MS-70 silver eagles are more expensive than MS-69 specimens, but coins in either grade makes tremendous – and patriotic – additions to any bullion portfolio or collection.

More Information About American Silver Eagles

Many consider the American Silver Eagle as the nation’s modern silver dollar. Silver eagles are a contemporary take on the classic Morgan dollars made during the days of Old West gun slinging, action-packed saloons, and endless opportunities on the untamed frontier. American Silver Eagles were born during the presidency of a classic American figure – President Ronald Reagan. In 1985, President Reagan signed into law legislation that instituted the American Eagle bullion coin program, which authorizes both the silver and gold American Eagle coins. American Silver Eagles – the coin whose silver dollar roots trace back through yesteryear and symbolizes a lasting legacy of “The Gipper” himself.

The gorgeous design on the American Silver Eagle was originally designed in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman and appeared on the half dollar for another 31 years, until 1947. Some 39 years later, in 1986, the United States Mint resurrected the patriotic design a few minute enhancements. Sculptor-Engraver John Mercanti, who later served as the U.S. Mint’s chief engraver, helped prepare the coin for production, also designing the coin’s heraldic eagle on the reverse.

Aside from some minor design modifications throughout the years and a one-year special edge inscription for the 30th anniversary of the series in 2016, American Silver Eagles remain virtually unchanged from their appearance during the Reagan era in 1986. For this and many other reasons, the silver eagle has enjoyed crossover collectible appeal among collectors and is a staple for bullion investment portfolios the world over.
